Amnesty For Terrorists

They’ve murdered thousands, rendered hundreds of thousands homeless, increased the hostility faced by millions of countrymen within and outside the country but today, there is a good news attached to their name. They have made orphans, widows and widowers, they have passed shrapnel through heads and blown off the bellies of pregnant women but to the government of Muhammadu Buhari, these mad men are just like the Niger Delta militants blowing off pipelines and deserves amnesty. They poisoned the already poisoned minds of poisonous and nontoxic Nigerians, adults and kids, and the hatred between the adherents of Islam and Christianity, thanks to the terrorists, is no longer covert. They have repainted the holy places with blood, tears and pain and made sure those who worship on sacred grounds are not burnt offerings.

In Borno State, they visited hamlets, set them on fire and rewarded whoever tried to escape with cannonballs. In Madalla, Niger State, they were in St Theresa and made sure parishioners got that horrible message wrapped in a dynamite. In Kuje and Nyanya, Abuja, Nigeria’s Capital, they killed another set of innocent people to communicate the same message. They destroyed towns, cities, villages and most importantly, bodies and minds, and unfortunately the minds, cities, towns and villages have not been rehabilitated. They kidnapped girls in Chibok and other places, tortured them, some died, some were married off, others sold off and the few lucky ones were made mistresses of the Boko Haram crew. Their reason: they want the nineteen Northern States to be Sharia complaint and run like a caliphate. They want the end of that poisonous western education.

They want the girl child to leave school and return to the kitchen, they want her looking decent on hijab, they want her in the other room where she truly and divinely belongs. They want the country’s democracy to be replaced with an autocrat handpicked by who else but the men who designed the system. They wanted to created an Islamic Caliphate run with the mentality Before the Common Era and like the cowards, timid men, weak men, haters and demons who shared the dreams of Donald Trump’s campaign material, they had, and still have, closet admirers and people who love what they have done, what they are doing and what they stand for. They may scream and pretend they hate the evil perpetrated by Boko Haram but what they really hate is the resistance shown when Boko Haram attack the right targets. That is Nigeria for you today, unfortunately. That is what we’ve become and not only do we only wish evil on our countrymen(correction: haters not countrymen) we do them evil.

In 2013, at the heart of the pummeling of the Boko Haram group, General Muhammadu Buhari made the statement: “You see in the case of the Niger Delta militants, the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua sent an airplane to bring them, he sat down with them and discussed with them, they were cajoled, and they were given money and granted amnesty. They were trained in some skills and were given employment, but the ones in the north are being killed and their houses demolished. They are different issues, what brought this? It is injustice.” He compared the madness and bombings of people and homes to what happened in Niger Delta and his move to grant this terror group Amnesty, unfortunately, reinforced the narrative that trended. The story was that he was a chief sponsor of the group who couldn’t stand and watch his brain child decimated and had to speak out.

That Buhari is a tribal supremacist and a subhuman without any supernatural skill, managerial skill or super intelligence is without doubt. That he is a pro-sharia, pro-fulani man filled with so much hate for other tribes in Nigeria is also without doubt. That he is a hate speaker whose utterances have led to chaos and death of innocent Nigerians, as seen in post-election crises in 2007 and 2011, is also true. That he is not a nationalist and the least qualified person in a class of kindergarten to head is a fact. That he uses deodorant to smear evil committed by his brothers, as seen in his handling of the Fulani Herdsmen atrocities, is also visible to a blind man. What is difficult to accept, even though highly possible, is that he is a major sponsor of Boko Haram and hence the decision to grant his boys amnesty.

We have seen the contrast between the treatment of the Fulani herdsmen madness and the IPOB agitation for Biafra and it is very easy for even an untrained eye to see that the President supports what is evidently evil perpetrated by his blood brothers but fights the actions of other impure bloods not even close to the spectrum of evil. So, the decision to grant Boko Haram members amnesty came from that place. A place of shared dreams and goals, of actualising and showing within believers the willingness to make sure sharia spreads across Nigeria; a place of family bond linked by an impure and brute understanding of tribal preservation, of committing evil together and damning, even when the laws are illegalized, the aspirations and dreams of other better tribalists; a place of disdain for Christianity, southern Nigeria and southern dreams for no good reason, of the mentality of Hitler’s Aryan race and the mission of Dan Fodio. That is where this ‘understanding’ is coming from.

The lies told by this administration has also got us confused, laughing, sad, crying but it’s been more tears with each imagined victory speech. First, the government said Boko Haram has been technically defeated and wherever they attacked, it was called ‘soft target’. When they attacked a market and many died it was called ‘soft target’. They blew up mosques and churches, many died but they were ‘soft targets’. Then they attacked communities in the North East, our fearful and compromised media didn’t report it, BBC and other foreign media did, our government disagreed but eventually accepted but still called them ‘soft targets’. Months later, the government said Boko Haram has been completely defeated and we asked if this stupidity is powered by solar energy.

When they ran jingles on imagined victories on the shameless and raucous, corrupt and sick bunch of asslickers AKA National Propaganda Tool of AGIP, Any Government In Power, or NTA if you like, the name ‘Boko Haram’ was sensorsed and whenever they report an attack by the group, they use the word insurgents. Actions like the soliciting of $1B from the senate to fight insurgents, the kidnapping and return of the Daptchi girls (that looks like a script), combined with the Amnesty attempt to go beyond the ridiculous. We on the logical and clear headed side wondered: if Boko Haram has been completely defeated, why is the President requesting for a billion dollars to finish them off? If the group has been rendered ineffective how was the Daptchi kidnap possible? How is it possible for a nonexistent group to attack and kidnap a group of people? Even beyond this physical dimension, effect subordinates cause, effects don’t happen unless there is an entity behind the scene.

So, who the hell are we giving amnesty to? When did the negotiations for the amnesty take place? Who were the representatives on both sides and what was agreed upon? Maybe the goal is to reinforce the military but considering the hunger in the land and the general poor standards of living, why are we prioritising our military if Boko Haram has been defeated? Or is there a grander scheme going behind the scenes we on the outside do not have the tools to fully understand? How can you be asking for amnesty for a group you are taking a billion dollar loan to fight against? How can one ask for a loan to fight a group he or she claims has been defeated? How can you be asking for a loan for a group whose sick and murderers members you aristocratically certified sane in a democracy? Not even a combined team of Emiretus English professors can give this combined state of confusion, stupidity, double speak, a befitting name.

When you negotiate with terrorists and grant them amnesty the message you are passing is encouragement. In this case, it doesn’t seem like the government is interested in seeing them like a terror group. Again, the double standards of the leadership of the current administration is in full glare. As an opposition, General Muhammadu Buhari once asked: “How did Boko Haram start? We know that their leader, Mohammed Yusuf started his militant and the police couldn’t control them and the army was invited. He was arrested by soldiers and handed over to the police. The appropriate thing to do, according to the law, was for the police to carry out investigations and charge him to court for prosecution, but they killed him, his in-law was killed, they went and demolished their houses”.

The hypocrisy in the attitude of the man today is beyond exquisite. He believed that the law courts had a final say and should be left to do judgement but so far as he is President we’ve not seen anything like it. From making excuses for the herdsmen marking Nigeria with blood signs; to shooting at protesters against his sick regime(yes, regime), to pronouncing stick-wielding IPOB protesters, who haven’t killed one soul, a terror group; to releasing members of the deadly terror group responsible for the death of thousands of Nigerians without court hearing. Who certified the Boko Haram terrorists free? And are they suffering from a mental illness to be certified sane and rehabilitated again or they are just silly bloodthirsty people with a strong conviction of the washed up ideologies their lives are modelled on?

What about charging them to court? Is it that the whole episode was hinged on blaming insanity to be the cause of their misbehavior and thus disqualify them for a space in court? What happens to the feelings of the families of the thousands they have killed, the families still suffering wounds from the group and every other person and Nigerian hoping that justice reduces the mental and physical trauma the group has placed on them? What happened to getting justice for killing people? What happened to showing a body language that exudes justice, fairness and value of human lives? Should we give any terror group that arises after this one Amnesty and if not why not? When fools and the wicked govern, the people suffer. This man is not the first fool, or the first witch, and unfortunately he won’t be the last.
